Walking on the Plaza at the beginning of May, I saw this tree after a rather soft, Spring rain.  Between the different shades of red and the greens and then the late day sun shining on it at a fairly straight angle, from the West, I liked how it looked.   

Happy Father's Day

 

I shot this just this week--last Thursday evening on the way home. It's from Smithville Lake. I wasn't looking for anything with a Father's Day theme especially--honest. I just saw this, liked it and shot. Anyway, again, happy Father's Day out there to all the Dads.

I shot this from the Broadway Bridge in early May on the way home.  It's looking into Kansas City, Kansas, of course.  I've found I can get some pretty reliable shots heading North like this at times, at sunset.

Spring rain

I shot this last month, on a Thursday evening on Cinco de Mayo after a Spring rain.   I learned shooting rain on flowers and leaves, especially in Spring, can make for great shots.  I think so, anyway.  This was on the Plaza.  I love these trees.

Spring on KU campus

I was on KU's campus in early May and caught this.  Flowers in general but Spring flowers, in particular, make photography easier, for sure.

Good food.  Nice place.  Great revamp of a building, too.  Great save.

impromptu paperweight

While at the Brookside Art Fair this year--a couple weeks ago--I went by a bank's booth (Midwest Bank, I believe) and they had a few great rocks on some papers--handouts--as paperweights.  I saw this one and loved it immediately.  The rock itself is terrific but the contrast of it on this white background was, I thought, really wonderful.  Anyway, it isn't the first time I photographed rocks in Brookside.  The young ladies had picked this up from the nearby rock garden to hold down their papers.  Great serendipity and contrast.

I saw this in Westport one Sunday morning last month.  I immediately liked the red, for starters, but also the textures.

Winter sunset

I shot this on the way home, going along I-70 this past March.  I loved the way the clouds obscured much of the sunset but let this much through and shaped it.

architecture as sculpture

The Bloch Gallery at the Nelson, of course.  I love this building.  Sure, it's best at dusk and after, when lit but during the day, it still shows very well, for sure.

the photography class

This is surely some photography class I found doing their work on the South lawn of the Nelson this past early April.  I don't know if they're with the Art Institute or what--I imagine they are.  I liked how this shot came out--a photograph of the photographers.

bottomland

Shot--you guessed it--on the way to work.  It's along 291 highway, just North of Independence.  I love shooting river bottomland, especially when you can get a backdrop of hills seemingly shooting straight up.  Also, I loved how isolated this little shack is.  I'd love to know the story behind it--why it's there, who built it.  I'm sure it was/is for business.

Brookside brilliance

I was dog- and house-sitting last week in Brookside again.  Whenever I do, whatever the month, I always walk the neighborhood and shoot what I can.  With all the gardens and flowers and sunsets, it makes it easy to find things to shoot.

Spring shed

Once again, shot in Smithville, near home, last March.  I don't think I'd have noticed or shot this but for the little tracks on the right, of a car or tractor or whatever, going away and up the hill.  It made for a better, more interesting study to me, with that.

I shot this in the city in March.  This and the green grass were about the only colors coming back into the area at the time.

Spring on the farm

I keep shooting this barn since it's close to my house.  I like the look and balance of it and it's great to see it through the seasons.  So far I've gotten it from Fall, through Winter and now this.

contrasts

I shot this as I do so many things, on the way to work one morning in March.  I saw it, while driving out of my neighborhood and liked the linear nature of the grass, the mix of colors and the textures.  While most everything else was still brown or grey, the bush was brilliant and the grass was coming on green, as you can see.

I shot this in March, too, while walking around for a First Friday in the Crossroads District.  It was pretty good weather, a good turnout and, as always, a good time.  I also happen to love diners, like most of us, I guess.

I shot this mid-March in Westport.  It was at the James B. Nutter offices.  Someone's interpretation of the flag.  Someone's child, maybe?

Part of that earlier series seen here of late afternoon, Spring sunset, through venetian blinds.  I loved the natural play of light with the rather unnatural, geometric and so, man-made light.

I got this in a friend's back yard in the middle of last month.  As I said earlier, I'm a huge fan of dogwood trees and their Spring blooms.  They make for an easy shoot, I think.

I saw these in Brookside on the way to a friend's house.  It was a family's garden.  I like trying to find things that are a twist on how we usually look at the commonplace.  I hope/think I got that here.

Spring is another thing, especially in Northwest Missouri, that seems easy to shoot.  So much color after being so grey and brown for so long.

This shot is dedicated to all the Moms and Mothers out there, sure, and particularly and especially to Helen Marie McCall Evans--Mom.  We lost her in 2000.

New York Life

For those of us here in Kansas City, we know this as the very old New York Life building.  I don't care who owns it, that's how I'm going to refer to it.  I put up a shot of this a couple weeks ago.  This is from that same shoot.  I was trying to go for a different angle but also trying to come up with something that showed it's strength, structure and detail.  I think I got it.

City Spring

April Spring

So many times, I'll be driving along and see things I want to shoot.  However, at that point, I usually have to slow the car, turn around and go back to get it.  This was just such a case.  I saw these trees in bloom about 2 weeks ago, along the highway in Smithville.  I knew I had to go back right then and shoot them---there were 4 of them.  The light and blooms, everything, was right, right then.  Or I thought so, anyway.

ME

I loved how this turned out.  I was walking along and saw this rather surreptitious sign someone put up.  I have no idea what it was about.  For what it's worth, it was/is in Westport.
